Meet Miss Pat

From the moment I got my first pet, animals have been a big part of my life. As a news reporter, I worked in a zoo, Q105's original Q Morning Zoo, with funny, wild humans. Together we created and published a cookbook, Cookin' With the Q-Zoo.

Sales of our book raised money for Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida.

My husband Darrel and I belong to a smart and curious cat, Miss Marble. We all live in a comfortable house in sunny Safety Harbor, Florida.

I hope you will enjoy my book, Miss Marble's Backyard Critters, as Miss Marble and our granddaughter, Lindsey Jo, discover what it's like to be a wild critter in our big backyard.

Fun Facts about Miss Pat

Here are the answers to your burning questions about your favorite author, Miss Pat Brooks.

Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I really wanted to be a cowgirl...or an actress...or a flight attendant (The lady that helps you get seated on an airplane). My dad wanted me to be in the Air Force (like he was), because he knew I wanted to travel the world. I wanted to be a cowgirl so badly that I drove my parents nuts asking for a horse, which I eventually got...Her name was, Cameo Lady.

Q: What's one of your favorite memories?
A: I loved it when my teachers read aloud stories from Rudyard Kipling- like The Jungle Book, etc. I used to line up my stuffed toys in front of a miniature blackboard and read to them!

Q: Do you play any instruments?
A: I played the organ for Sunday School and church from junior high through high school.

Q: Were you popular in school?
A: I think so. I was captain of Sebring high school Varsity Cheerleaders and Homecoming Queen!

Q: Did you have a favorite teacher?
A: Too many to say just one, but my senior high school English teacher, Mrs. Ruth Handley, inspired me to pursue my B.A. degree in English at U.S.F.. She made literature 'real' with her relaxed yet no-nonsense style.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not writing?
A: I like to play tennis, read, or go walking in the woods.I like being near water. I love horseback riding. I enjoy cooking and eating good food - whether it's fine dining or in a dive-style restaurant. If I can do these things with family, life is even sweeter! Gee, (sigh) I wish LJ lived closer!

Q: Have you done any exciting things in your life?
A: You mean, besides publishing a book about our wonderful feline? Here are some things that my friends think are pretty cool;

~I applied for the Journalist in Space program just prior to the tragic explosion on January 28th, 1986: as news director at Q105 (WRBQ FM) I reported it to our listeners just minutes after it happened.

~I grew up in Sebring, home of road racing in America: The 12-hours of Sebring Endurance Race. I completed Skip Barber Driving School and competed in vintage sports car races at Road Atlanta and Moroso International Speedway in West Palm Beach.

~I once emceed the Miss USA Pageant!

Q: What were you like as a kid?
A: When I was six-years-old I was shy, so I'd run and hide under the playground picnic table when the boys chased me.
